The "Star" fighter of the sixties
The Starfighter was exactly what the U.S.A.F. needed in a front-line fighter. It was a light, fast fighter that was simple to maintain and easy to fly. The huge numbers of aircraft that could be produced and fielded helped to deter direct Soviet interference in the Vietnam War. Starfighters could push Mach 2, the first combat aircraft to fly so fast, and their simplicity made them popular with global air forces.
