The Lockheed (formerly General Dynamics) F-16 Falcon first flew in 1974 and won the US Air Force Lightweight Fighter Program fly-off to find a low cost alternative to the F-15 Eagle. The Falcon was the first military aircraft to feature fly-by-wire control which contributes to its outstanding maneuverability. The F-16A Plus and F-16C are upgraded with more advanced avionics and targeting equipment and the C-model can also carry the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).
